Find a Work-life Balance Rather Than Coming to Work Sick

Even though the HSE’s recently published annual health and safety statistics report showed that fewer working days were lost last year than any year on record, that does not necessarily mean UK employees are getting healthier. In fact, 69 per cent of employees have admitted to attending work ill rather than calling in sick, according to a recent workplace wellness survey. The primary reason for this mentality is the fear of falling behind on work.

However, this unhealthy motivation can deteriorate your mental and physical health. While it may be difficult, adjusting this perception can help ensure that you’re able to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

To assist in this effort, consider taking the following steps:

  • Just say no. You are only capable of completing so much in any given day, and there is a delicate balance between quality and quantity. Know what your limits are and stick to them.

  • Leave work at work. There is little point to going home at the end of the day if you still check your email and work on projects after hours. Give yourself time to decompress before readdressing projects.

  • Forget about perfection. You need to recognise that not everything you do will be perfect, and that is OK.

  • Don’t take on everything by yourself. You are not a one-person team. You have co-workers that can help carry the load.

  • Set your own rules. Work in a way that makes you comfortable and not according to others’ potentially unrealistic expectations.

  • These Remedies Will Help Shorten Your Colds and Flus This Winter

On average, 8,000 people in the United Kingdom die each year from the flu, according to the NHS. Even though that is a small percentage of the total number of people that contract the flu each year, it’s nevertheless important to protect yourself from flu germs, especially as the NHS gears up for what could be the worst flu season in its history.

However, even with the most thorough flu preparation, you can still fall ill. If that happens, here are several remedies to help shorten your cold or flu:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to replace what you’ve lost through sweating and to help thin out your mucus.

  • Get plenty of rest, as sleep helps your body fight the infection.

  • Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to help bolster your immune system.

  • Take painkillers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, to help relieve aches and fevers.

  • Use decongestants to help relieve sinus pressure and congestion. Alternatively, you can try using a humidifier.

  • Take vitamin and mineral supplements, such as vitamin C and zinc, to help you recover quicker.
